Usually, when we hear the word artificial intelligence, we can picture some Hollywood movie robots. they are usually crime-fighting robots with high intelligence. Yet, this is not even close to what actually is an AI. To actually understand AI, let us see what it is and what it can offer to us.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence or AI is a simulation that possesses human intelligence. Usually, AI is in machines and computer system. These machines are made to program and think like a human.  The term AI is also used for machines that can exhibit human-like traits. these traits can be problem-solving, learning etc.

These intelligent machines have become an important part of our technology industry. The research for AI technology is very specialized and technical. The AI processes include the following:

  • Learning: acquiring information and making rules that use the acquired information
  • Reasoning: using the rules made to come to a definite conclusion or at least an approximation
  • Self-correction

The basic principle behind Artificial Intelligence is its ability to mimic human intelligence. The machine should be able to do from the easiest of the human activities to the most complex task. AI allows its users to tailor it according to its needs, e it for personal use or for businesses.

With every year that passes, the definition of AI keeps changing and evolving. While it started with basic calculation functions and recognition of text, this is not AI anymore. These activities are now considered basic computer functions.

Types of AI

Following are the two major categories of AI that can be found:

The first category is Weak AI which is also called Narrow AI. This AI has been designed and trained for a specific task. We usually use weak AI in the form of virtual personal assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri.

The second category pf AI is called the Strong AI. The strong AI is also called the artificial general intelligence. While weak AI was made for a specific task, strong AI is for general purposes. It can mimic generalized human cognitive capabilities. When an unfamiliar task is presented in front of the system, it can, very easily, find its solution. The problem solving doesn’t need any human intervention too.

Role of artificial intelligence

AI has made a wide array of human-like activities possible. We hear about a computer that can play chess to self-driven cars. All these are only possible because of AI. Using artificial intelligence, we can teach computers and other machines to do specific tasks. AI can do it by processing data and recognizing patterns.

Automates and analyzes deeper data and discover patterns

AI can perform computerized, high volume tasks without any problem. This task can take humans hours which can be done by the computer in minutes. But humans are still needed to set the system up and ask correct questions.

AI can use neural networks with hidden layers. This is an almost impossible task a few years back. This changed with big data and the incredible power of computers. You will need a huge amount of data so that the AI can train for the deep learning models.

Adding intelligence to the existing products

Artificial intelligence is not sold as a separate product. What usually happens is that it is added to the product that you are already using. The example of this is Siri which was added to the new Apple products. Automation, bots, conversational platforms and smart machines are combined with home and workplaces technologies. These systems have a large amount of data which can improve the technology. The technology can be used in investment analysis and security intelligence.

AI has incredible accuracy

With the neural system, AI can achieve the accuracy that is not possible by a human. The more we use AI, the more data it gathers. With the gathered data, it can become even more accurate. With the deep learning technique, AI can help find out cancer through MRI. This is especially useful in the medical field because the accuracy of AI is almost the same as a radiologist.

Getting the most out of the data

As we have discussed before, artificial intelligence has a self-learning algorithm. The data that AI gets becomes its intellectual property. You take a huge amount of data and apply artificial intelligence on it to get your desired result. The better your data, the more accurate your result would be. It can become a competitive advantage for any business who has better data. Better data would assure that even if competition uses the same technique, it can never get similar results.

Data does the programming through a progressive learning algorithm

With a lot of data, the AI finds patterns, regularities and structures in it. This gives the AI a skill. It makes the algorithm a predictor. It has understood the pattern and can predict results almost accurately. This means that after a few online shopping sessions, AI can predict and show you what you might want to order next.

It becomes even more fascinating when you provide the algorithm with new data. The model adapts to the new information. This AI technique is back propagation. It allows the model to take in the new information provided and adjust accordingly.
